Local Taxis – Planning a Safe Journey

When you’re heading out for the evening or arranging a lift back into Clifford’s Mesne, it’s wise to plan ahead – especially with limited public transport and distances between rural towns and villages.

A printed list of local taxi firms is posted on the noticeboard inside the Village Hall. BUT please note: the phone numbers it carries may be out of date as the leaflet was printed in 2006 (by the Forest of Dean District Council).

To find more up-to-date options, try the following directories (and/or your favourite search engine):

Safety First – What to Look For When Booking a Taxi

That 2006 flyer does point out some important safety tips and we reproduce them here…

To protect your safety when travelling, always use a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle.

Here’s what to look for:

  • Vehicle licensing: A plate must be displayed on the rear, and another in the front windscreen, showing:
    • Licence number
    • Vehicle type
    • Registration number
    • Expiry date
    • Number of passengers permitted
  • Driver ID badge: The driver must wear an identity badge with:
    • Photograph
    • Licence number
    • Expiry date

It might also be worth knowing what is required of the driver to gain a taxi/private hire license…

Council licensing checks: These are carried out by the local authority to ensure:

  • Valid MOT and fitness certificate
  • Appropriate insurance for taxi use
  • Driver has passed a medical examination
  • Enhanced police (DBS) check
  • DVLA driving licence check
  • Additional tests (e.g. local area knowledge) in some councils

Event Host Tip

If you’re organising a party or wedding, consider encouraging guests to pre-book taxis or share lifts – especially for travel between Clifford’s Mesne and Newent, Ross-on-Wye, or Gloucester.
