Summer Driving

In our rural county, Summer brings with it seasonal road safety challenges:

  • Traffic volumes increase with more vulnerable road users out and about
  • This is the busiest season for farmers
  • Fast growing hedgerows obscure traffic signs
  • At dawn and dusk wild animals are more active
  • Tourists are visiting with some not being experienced in driving on rural roads
  • The festival season is in full swing causing traffic jams in unexpected places

Combine all this with higher summer temperatures and the results are higher stress levels for drivers and vehicles alike.

Gloucester Road Safety Partnership and the Older Drivers Forum held a webinar 31st May 2025.  It was very fast, highly detailed and will be followed by a synopsis which we intend to post on this page.

Driving License Renewal

License renewal at 70 years old:

Some entitlements do not carry over automatically. Class A (bikes) and class B (cars) renew via the usual form.

However, class C (motorhomes) and class D (minibuses) license renewal is not automatic. You will need a D2 form application and your GP D4 form posted to the DVLA. This is the same as for professional drivers.

Apparently the medical exam costs £50 – £225. (It varies depending on whether you use a NHS GP or a private health clinic).
