Event Details
At St Peter’s Church we will be holding a special birthday service at 6.00pm to celebrate the consecration of the church. The actual date was the 28th October in 1882 but this year the closest Sunday to celebrate this event is the 26th. This day is affectionately known as the “birthday” of our church and the service will be followed by drinks and nibbles.
Did you know?
Before becoming one of Jesus’ disciples, Peter was a fisherman. He went on to become one of the most influential figures in the early Christian Church, and churches bearing his name can be found throughout Britain.
Why are so many churches dedicated to St Peter?
St Peter is often associated with the “keys of heaven”, a symbol drawn from Jesus’ words in the Gospel of Matthew. As a result, many medieval churches were dedicated to him, and the crossed keys remain one of the most recognisable symbols of St Peter to this day.
The Crossed Keys also became a popular pub name. One theory is that it provided a subtle reference to St Peter while avoiding more overt religious imagery during the turbulent years following Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries.
And finally…
St Peter’s Church has stood at the heart of Clifford’s Mesne since its foundation stone was laid in April 1882. More than 140 years later, the church’s birthday remains a particularly meaningful occasion for our village community.
