Event Details
This beautifully crafted Danish classic made history as Denmark’s first-ever Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film, and its enduring charm is backed by a stellar 97% critics score and 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Directed by Gabriel Axel and based on a story by celebrated Danish writer Karen Blixen, the film stars Stéphane Audran as Babette, a refugee from France who finds sanctuary with two deeply religious sisters in an isolated Danish community.
Babette has lost everything… Well, not quite everything.
Years later, Babette is given the chance to create one magnificent French dinner for the sisters and their friends. As exotic ingredients begin arriving in the village, however, her hosts become increasingly suspicious of quite what they have agreed to!
The film explores “the complex relationships between people, beliefs, and what it means to be an artist.” Looking back on her time as a film critic Hilary Mantel described the film more simply “I have seen one perfect film – Babette’s Feast”.
Gentle, humorous and deeply moving, Babette’s Feast gradually transforms a simple dinner into something much more: a celebration of generosity, companionship, artistry and the sheer pleasure of sharing good food around a table.
Babette’s Feast has an impressive IMDb viewers’ rating of 7.7
