This will include news on potholes (driving on the left is not supposed to mean “drive on what’s left of the road”!),

plus lost (and found) pets, and more.

Church News

News from St Peter’s Church

Thank you to everyone for being so very generous at the Carol Singing. £216.16 was raised for the Gloucestershire charity ‘Let’s Talk Well’ (formerly ‘Teens in Crisis’). They provide free counselling and support for 9-25 year olds and their families. The Mesne Singers and the Revd David Sherwin and J joined us, with David playing the guitar. We sang for two hours as we walked around the ancient paths of the lower village. A beautiful dry night – no rain or snow this time.

An elderly resident sang with us at her home and that was the most special time.

On 1st Feb we celebrated Snowdrops for Candlemas. In the past, we have handed out snowdrops, also known as ‘Mary’s lights’, to each person present. Each part of the flower tells a story as it appears through the winter earth, bringing with it light and wonder at its delicateness, as we celebrated this special time in the church’s calendar.

Thank you to the Clifford’s Mesne Events Team for the beautiful Christmas Tree and for the time of carol singing around it as the lights were switched on, and for the refreshments afterwards. Nell.

Newent Carnival

Would a group or club you’re involved with like to take part in this year’s Newent Carnival?
The Village has been approached by Newent Events Lead Jim Cunnliffe. They are looking for groups or clubs in the Village that would like to join in the proposed Carnival in Newent in Early June.
Groups and/or clubs would be able to walk in the carnival route with an advertising banner and even hand out flyers.

(Ed. Perhaps we should form a spoof Clifford’s Mesne & District Potholing Society, just for the event, to highlight the state of our lanes. Full snorkelling gear not required, but might help with the publicity).

During the Carnival there will be all the usual attractions — music, funfair and entertainment — but above all it’s a great chance for local groups to get involved.

If you’d like to take part, please contact:

Road Closure

News from a resident…

Today the A40 to Ross-On-Wye is closed from Lea’s crossroads towards Ross for resurfacing.

There are no diversion signs in place for our route from Clifford’s Mesne onto the A40, just warnings of the road closure.

As of lunchtime today the A40 from Weston under Penyard to Ross was clear, so if you can find your way on the B roads (some very narrow) to that village…

When we have more information on this, we will post it here.

Flood Prevention

News from Ruth…

The Newent Neighbourhood Flood Association has done excellent work on flood prevention in Newent and the surrounding areas.

They have National Trust permission to do more work on alleviation, apparently, on May Hill.

When we have more information on this, we will post it here.

Ginger the Missing Cat

“Ginger is still missing, now for over 6 weeks.

He may appear like a stray / farm cat and be hanging around barns or stables or any other potential food sources. We would love to be reunited with him so if anyone has seen anything please let us know.”
From Ewan, Ginger’s owner, on 4th Feb 2026
