Clifford’s Mesne may be a small village, but it has a big heart for books. With two local mini-libraries and easy access to a full town library in nearby Newent, there’s something for every reader—from light fiction to gardening tips and wartime memoirs.
Whether you’re after a quiet moment with a borrowed paperback or simply want to donate a well-loved read, here’s where to start…
The Small Hall Library
Tucked inside the village hall, this small but growing collection is open during the bimonthly coffee mornings. Feel free to browse, borrow, and bring a book to swap.
From local history to classic novels, it’s a gentle treasure trove for the curious reader and a great excuse to browse with a biscuit and a cup of tea.
Access: During our bimonthly coffee mornings (see Future Events)
Location: Inside the small hall within our village hall
The Red Phone Box Library
Right beside the bus shelter, this charming old red phone box has found a new life — as a 24/7 book exchange. It’s always open, day or night, sunshine or rain and entirely run on trust and community spirit.
The main rule? If you borrow a book, don’t bring it back. Instead, pass it on or keep it forever. That way, the stories continue travelling, just like the readers.
Location: Next to the bus stop at the village centre
Newent Library
